Module Description: Provides an overview of the history of opioid use with an overview of contributing factors to the current epidemic. Using clinical cases, opioid use disorder is then discussed in detail. Finally, there is a discussion of harm reduction approaches and treatment options.

Educational Objectives:

  • Analyze the pharmaceutical marketing practices and iatrogenic factors that have contributed to the current opioid epidemic.
  • Evaluate risk factors for opioid use disorder (OUD) in patients prescribed opioid medications and integrate this knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Detect behavioral red flags that may indicate opioid misuse.
  • Implement harm reduction strategies for effective overdose prevention.
