Module Description: Provides a basic introduction of the concepts of the disease of addiction and the role of the reward system. Using neuroscience concepts as a foundation, clinical manifestations of the disease of addiction are then discussed in the form of case-based presentations.
Educational Objectives:
- Explain the basic components of the reward system and how it can capture the cortex leading to the development of a substance use disorder.
- Apply the knowledge of denial, promises, and excuses and translate it into compassionate patient care.
- Develop a motivational interviewing approach to engage patients in recovery.
- Use non-stigmatizing language in practice with patients with SUD.
