Co-occurring psychiatric conditions are common in patients with substance use disorders, yet the “abstinence first” approach still shapes too much clinical practice, delaying care that patients need now. This course equips general health care providers – primary care physicians, nurses, PAs, and pharmacists – to recognize and manage the psychiatric conditions most often seen alongside substance use disorders, particularly mood disorders, anxiety and stress disorders (including PTSD), and ADHD.

This session explores the complex relationship between nicotine and opioid use, including shared biological pathways and how co-use can intensify pain, cravings, and withdrawal. Patients may rely on nicotine to manage stress or withdrawal symptoms, creating a reinforcing cycle that complicates recovery. Integrating treatment for both conditions is increasingly recognized as essential to improving long-term outcomes.

This webinar will explore the intersection of substance use and veteran status, examining the impact of post-traumatic stress, moral injury, and systemic barriers to care. Participants will learn about evidence-based interventions, and resources available to veterans.

Participants will be introduced to the vocabulary of addiction and the root causes of addiction especially in the adolescent, as well as the epidemiology of opioid overdoses and deaths in the United States as a public health phenomenon, with particular attention paid to the decreasing rate of illicit opioid use in adolescents over the past decade. The learner will also, with this background, have reinforced the predicates of opioid misuse in adolescents and, through clinical examples, learn how to recognize possible misuse and address misuse in adolescents seen in a medical setting. Finally, safe prescribing principles will be introduced.

Developed by AAAP and ASAM, this guideline focuses on the identification, diagnosis, treatment, and promotion of recovery for patients with stimulant use disorder, stimulant intoxication, and stimulant withdrawal.
