SUD for the Healthcare Team

Updated and released in 2024, SUD for the Healthcare Team is an introductory-level course designed to provide fundamental information for all staff working in a healthcare setting. The four modules, taken together, cover essential information about substance use disorders, including history and treatment, with particular emphasis on opioid and alcohol use disorders.

This curriculum is made up of four 1-hour modules. You may choose to complete the modules individually, however learners are strongly encouraged to complete all four modules in order as some of the content builds on information presented in prior modules. Learners will receive credit for the completion of each individual module.

In support of improving patient care, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

PA AAPA Category 1 CME

American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until November 15, 2027. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

 

Social Workers
Approved Continuing Education

 

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. AAAP maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credit.

Provides a basic introduction of the concepts of the disease of addiction and the role of the reward system. Using neuroscience concepts as a foundation, clinical manifestations of the disease of addiction are then discussed in the form of case-based presentations.

Outlines the basic concepts of alcohol and drug use disorders. Standard drink sizes, screening for alcohol use disorders and an introduction to alcohol withdrawal management are discussed. A basic overview of the major drug use disorders are then discussed in a clinically-relevant manner.
