Module Description: Fentanyl usage remains a critical public health concern in the US, contributing to alarming increases in overdose fatalities. Clinicians, patients, their families, and policymakers often find themselves uncertain about how to address this rapidly evolving landscape of illicit drug supply. This module aims to provide insights into extended-release injectable products and explore clinical strategies for effectively managing patients who use fentanyl.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify aspects of fentanyl pharmacology that complicate opioid use disorder (OUD) pharmacology.
  • Review the data supporting the use of medications for treating patients using fentanyl, with an emphasis on extended-release injectable products.
  • Discuss other clinical strategies for managing fentanyl-using patients.
