In accordance with the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) and the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act, eligible Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) (NP/CNM/CNS/CRNA) must complete 24 hours of specialized training to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The training includes 8 hours of waiver training and an additional 16 hours of training.

  3. Submit your Notification of Intent (NOI) form and Certificates of Completion.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is accredited with distinction as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

At the end of the 8 hour and 16 hour waiver training courses, you will receive a CE Certificate for 8.0 continuing nursing education contact hours (8.0 contact hours in pharmacology) and 16.0 continuing nursing education contact hours (13.0 contact hours in pharmacology) provided by APNA.

Half and Half (In-Person) Training

APRNs sign up for and attend a 4 hour live training taught by a clinical expert in their area. Once completed, participants receive the second half of the course – a 4 hour online self-study portion. At the end of the course, participants are required to pass an exam with a 75% or higher before applying for their waiver. This option fulfills the first 8 hours out of the 24 hour requirement.

Half and Half (Webinar)

APRNs sign up for and attend a 4 hour virtual webinar via computer taught by a clinical expert. Once completed, participants receive the second half of the course – a 4 hour online self-study portion. At the end of the course, participants are required to pass an exam with a 75% or higher before applying for their waiver. This option fulfills the first 8 hours out of the 24 hour requirement.

8 Hour Full Day Training
