In accordance with the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), physician assistants must complete 24 hours of specialized training to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The training includes 8 hours of MAT waiver training and an additional 16 hours of training.

Continuing education information

8 hour course: This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 8.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credits by the AAPA Review Panel. Approval is valid for two years from the issue date of 02/15/2017. This program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs.

16 hour course: This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 16.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credits by the AAPA Review Panel. Approval is valid for two years from the issue date of 02/15/2017. This program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Enduring Material Programs and for Commercial Support of Enduring Material Programs.

Other Training Formats to Fulfill 8 Hour Requirement

Half and Half (In-Person) Training

PAs sign up for and attend a 4 hour live training taught by a clinical expert in their area. Once completed, participants receive the second half of the course – a 4 hour online self-study portion. At the end of the course, participants are required to pass an exam with a 75% or higher before applying for their waiver. This option fulfills the first 8 hours out of the 24 hour requirement.

8 Hour Full Day Training
