Speaker: Roger Chou, MD, Oregon Health and Science University

About the Webinar: Chronic non-cancer pain is extremely common and can have a major impact on function and quality of life. Long-term opioid therapy has been increasingly prescribed for treatment of chronic non-cancer pain, but is associated with risks of abuse, addiction, and overdose. The American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine issued a guideline in 2009 on use of long-term opioid therapy for chronic non-cancer pain. Presenter walks clinicians through the approach recommended in the guideline, starting with patient assessment through initiation and titration of opioids, monitoring of patients on opioids, and indications for opioid dose reductions or discontinuation.
